Buwan ng Wika Celebration
Buwan ng Wika is held annually on the month of August to promote the National Language. Buwan ng Wika was previously called Linggo ng Wika but later changed by the Senate. It is a month long festival of Filipino dialects and did you ever know that it was made to fall on the birth month of late President Manuel Quezon who was well-known to be the father of our famed Filipino language (Ama ng Wikang Pambansa). He felt that Filipinos must unite by means of one national language (Tagalog later changed to Filipino) without abandoning their ethnic dialects of blood.
We were told to honor Buwan ng Wika eversince we had declared Philippine Independence. Even said by our ancestors that we must have one national language to represent us and our country. Filipino language upto now is very controversial as to what it is more than three decades ago. Still we must continue to let it flourish to unite the many etnolinguistic groups inside our homeland, the Philippines.
Buwan ng Wika this year coincides with the International Year of Insigenous Lamguages (IYIL) as declared by UNESCO. The overall message is to raise awareness of the value of all native languages, not only for those people who speak them, but for society as a whole. there are reasons on why we feast as such;
First, Knowledge. Language are portals to systems of data. A vast amount of knowledge is encoded in our vocabulary, which has developed over thousands of years of interaction between humans and the environment. If one is lost, much disappear with it;
Second, Diversity. Languages affect the way we think, learn, communicate, and behave. They affect our personalities and cultures. The more languages we have, the more diverse society is. Diversity is interesting, beautiful, and educational. It presents frequent opportunities for personal development and joy;
And third, Peace. The more languages that thrive, the more languages that we will be exposed to. Through this we become humbler, and we learn to tolerate, appreciate, and cooperate with other people. Recognizing and respecting each other’s languages is a way of recognizing each other’s identities, which is an important element of peace building.
